Take care of your ears - prevention beats the cureAlthough cenotes are fresh spring water, you can get "swimmer's ear" from the bacteria and algae that live in them. Even ocean water can cause an ear infection at times. An ear infection is very painful, but easily prevented. You can buy "swimmer's ear" drops, or make your own by mixing a solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide. After a day of swimming, put a few drops in both ears and keep the drops inside your ear with some cotton. Leave it in for half an hour or so. Ta Da, no earaches! If you do get an infection, you can buy ear drops at the pharmacy, but it is better to go to the doctor first so s/he can clean out your ear first. Don't fly or dive until your ear is better, it will only hurt unbearably. |
