Tour,
drive or taxi
Perhaps the best way to see Cozumel is by motor scooter. When you get
off of the ferry prepare to be accosted by the hoards of sales people.
These effective mongers offer everything from snorkel trips to mini vans.
If you are in a group of four the perfect solution is the timeless convertible
VW Bug, normally about $45 for a full day includes one tank of gas, and
Insurance. See the Cozumel Directory for
rental car companies.
If you are with only one other person, or alone, try one of the many
motor scooter rental places. The prices are fixed, $25 for the whole day
includes gas and insurance. Make sure you get a new bike with good tires
and nothing broken, you never know. Look over the scooter and have the
rental agent write down anything that is wrong with it, no matter how
small. When you return the scooter you will be charged for even the most
minor scratches if they aren't noted on the paperwork. Please, wear the
dorky helmet.
The
island is very small and if you speed you can actually go around it twice
on one tank of gas with time to spare. Suggested activities include eating
at small ocean side restaurants on the windward side of the island, or
snorkeling on the leeward side of the island. Try to get out of town.
Cozumel is very expensive and the town of San Miguel is very crowded.
If you don't like to drive, hire out a taxi for the day.
Ferries
A number of ferries make the crossing to Cozumel at regular intervals,
times and prices frequently change so confirm before you
go. The main ferry line runs almost hourly from Playa del Carmen on the
Mexico, Mexico II, and Mexico III boats. There ticket counter is right
next to the dock. All passenger ferries arrive at the main dock in Cozumel.
Be sure to check the return times before heading out to explore Cozumel
so you don't miss the last boat back. When the wind picks up you aren't
in danger on the big boats, but the motion of the boat does make some
people seasick. If you are susceptible, be sure to bring motion sickness
medication with you, or buy it at the dock.
